My Quilts

I started quilting by accident when we moved from Missouri to Tulsa, OK so that David could go back to school and get his A&P and start working on his flight training. I was lonely and looking for new friends and our new church had a monthly "Ladies Craft Night." It was an open, bring your own craft sort of affair. I was terrified because I didn't know anyone but I gathered my scrapbooking supplies and went in hopes of making new friends. There were scrappers, knitters, and quilters. Over time I did make new friends and I began to come home with nothing new done in my scrapbook because I spent the entire evening observing my quilting friends and oohing and aahing over their projects. They were happy and eager to teach me and helped me choose a simple beginner pattern for my first attempt.

My first quilt went to Emily, who was nine at the time. She chose the fabric. I machine piece all my blocks but I quilted it by hand.

This one was a gift to a dear friend. She loves cats and when I saw this pattern on the internet I had to buy it and make it for her. The eyes and nose are the plastic kind you would purchase to make a stuffed animal. I machine quilted it but hand embroidered the cat's claws, mouth and wiskers. His tail is made from a boa trimmed to fit.

This was my first "block of the month" project. I quilted it in strips on my regular sewing machine, then added the borders. I gave this one to my mom when we left the states for language school.

This was a Hancock's block of the month project in a Lewis and Clark theme. Since my oldest was at that time interested in American history, I decided this one would be for him. I just barely finished it in time for him to graduate from high school and leave Congo for college. I didn't care too much for some of the fabrics suggested by Hancock's so I made some subsititions.

Begun as a block of the month sampler quilt, this one is the first quilt I decided to keep for myself and has a story HERE.

  1. I LOVE your quilts!!! Quilts are a very important part of my life too. I have made many quilts for family and friends including a lap quilt for my mom and one for my mother-in-law. I never thought of taking pics of them before giving them away--what a non-cool beans move! They are a symbol of life to me. Bits and pieces of life eventually make their way into a personal quilt square to tell the story of where I am in that phase of my life--so my life quilt is made up of all the squares representing my phases. When I die, my quilt will be complete. Quilts remind me that there is a bigger picture to the situations I am in and they remind me to see the beauty in my life quilt. Nancy, thanks so much for sharing!
